The Job

In order to be eligible for an apprenticeship, you need to have resided in the United Kingdom for 3 consecutive years or have the Right to Work in the United Kingdom.

We are currently recruiting for a Groundworks apprentice, located in Bedminster, Bristol. On successful application you will be put forward to the employer for an interview.

Apprentices will be working in all aspects of Groundworks. Some examples are:

Install ironworks relating to access covers and frames, and gully grates and frames including preparatory brickwork.

Locate and excavate to expose buried utility services using electronic location instruments.

Prepare to, then direct and guide the movement of vehicles, plant or machinery.

Set out and lay flags, paviours and edging to paths, driveways and other areas.

Select and use basic setting out equipment including tape measures, levels, straight edges, lines and pins, boning rods and laser equipment under guidance of the supervisor.

Although this is a Groundworks apprentice role, there may at times be some other aspects of construction involved in, which they shall be supervised and trained. When the apprentices are working, they will be supervised by a fully qualified member of staff and will be shown all the correct procedures including health and safety in the workplace. Along with ensuring that their work area is clean and safe, and that all the tools are cleaned and put away correctly at the end of each day.

Person Specification

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to undertake a trade apprenticeship in Groundworks and ultimately gain an apprenticeship in the trade. The prospective candidate needs to be enthusiastic, punctual, able to take instructions, and reliable. They must be able to cope with the physical side of the role enough to engage in manual labour. They need to have both communication and organisation skills whilst being able to work as part of a team or on their own.

Your own transport is preferred but not essential for this role.

The Apprenticeship and Training Provider

The successful candidates will be enrolled onto a 21-month Groundworks apprenticeship with Greenlight Safety & Training. You will attend college 3 consecutive days a month at our centre in Bedminster, Bristol. You will learn your craft with experienced Groundworks tradesman and work your way to building a successful career in construction.

These vacancies are open to all ages, however due to the apprenticeship wage may not be suitable for older candidates.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

There are many different career progression routes within construction, such as becoming a site supervisor or manager. Directly after your apprenticeship, you could be offered any of the following career progression routes:

Self – employed Groundworker

Level 2 Plant Operative Apprenticeship

Level 2 Property Maintenance Apprenticeship (general builder/all trades Apprenticeship)

Level 2 Highway Maintenance Apprenticeship

Working Week and Pay

Apprentices will be expected to work a minimum of 30 hours a week and a maximum of 40 hours a week with exception for college.

All apprenticeships are subject to apprenticeship wage which starts at £6.40 an hour.

Please note, the pay on the advertisement is just a range and the hourly rate can change depending on the employer.
